News Release

Honouring newcomers’ contributions to Canada

Costas Menegakis, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, congratulated winners of the seventh annual RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Awards in Toronto, while Alice Wong, Minister of State (Seniors) and Member of Parliament for Richmond, congratulated award recipients in Vancouver.  Organized by Canadian Immigrant Magazine, these peoples’ choice awards recognize inspirational immigrants who have come to Canada, achieved success and made a positive difference within their community.

The winners were announced at events on June 23rd in Toronto and June 25th in Vancouver. A list of the winners is available at Canada’s Top 25 Immigrants 2015.

The RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Awards exemplify the valuable role the private sector can play in fostering a welcoming society and raising awareness of the many positive benefits of immigration to Canada.

The Government of Canada is a global leader in immigrant integration, funding the provision of settlement services such as language training, employment-related services, and community connections, which help newcomers become active members of Canadian society.

Quick facts

  • The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that newcomers integrate and contribute fully to the Canadian economy, and to their communities, as soon as possible.
  • The government has significantly increased funding for newcomer settlement services in jurisdictions outside of Quebec, from less than $200 million in 2005-06 to almost $600 million in 2015-16.
  • More than 700 service provider organizations across Canada (outside of Quebec) receive federal funding to help newcomers adjust to life in Canada.

Quote

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate these “Top 25” immigrants for their many achievements. Your success is an inspiration to others, both newcomers and long established Canadians. Immigration makes Canada stronger. Honouring your contributions demonstrates the value of helping those who come to Canada to fully integrate in their communities and into our economy as quickly as possible.”

Costas Menegakis, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, and Member of Parliament for Richmond Hill

“I offer my sincere congratulations to each and every recipient of the RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Awards. It is the countless stories of newcomers to Canada, stories of perseverance and great successes, that have helped make our Canada the diverse and prosperous nation that it is today. Newcomers have contributed so much to our great nation, and for that, we are grateful.”

The Honourable Alice Wong, Minister of State (Seniors)
