Alberta gov’t pitches in for typhoon Haiyan victims in Philippines

Philippine Honourary Consuls General in Alberta Province expressed their thanks to the Alberta government for announcing it will appropriate relief money for victims of typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

“Government support goes a long way in ensuring those suffering from the after effects of Typhoon Haiyan receive basic supplies that are necessary for recovery and survival. We thank all Albertans for their support in this time of great need,” said Esmeralda Agbulos, the Edmonton-based honourary consul general, in a statement posted on alberta.ca.

“The Filipino Canadian Community in Calgary expresses its gratitude to the Government of Alberta and the people of Canada for extending a helping hand to the Philippines in its time of extreme need. Our community will never forget this gesture and we will forever be grateful,” added Godofredo  Ferdinand Aguirre, the honourary consul general based in Calgary.

The province is committing up to $500,000 by matching Albertans’ donations to the Canadian Red Cross.

“I am proud to stand with people of the Philippines. My government will match Albertans donations to the Red Cross,” announced Premier Alison Redford on FB.

 

“Along with all Albertans, the Alberta government is concerned for the well-being of Filipinos affected by the devastating typhoon.  We offer our heartfelt sympathy to those who have had family and friends affected by this massive disaster,” said Thomas Lukaszuk, Deputy Premier, Minister of Enterprise and Advanced Education on Sunday.

Albertans can make their donations to the Canadian Red Cross online or can call 1-800-418-1111.

Edmonton, the capital city, reportedly has around 40,000 Albertans of Filipino descent and another 60,000 live in other municipalities in the province, majority of them in Calgary City.(pinoy edmonton news)
