International Triathlon Officials Visit Edmonton

Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson welcomed International Triathlon Union (ITU) Executive Board members at City Hall. ITU members are in Edmonton to preview event facilities ahead of next year’s World Triathlon Grand Final, to be held August 26-September 1, 2014 in Hawrelak Park.

“We’re honoured to host ITU Executive Board members for their winter meetings,” says Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson. “Edmonton has a tremendous reputation for hosting international sporting events, and next summer I know Edmontonians will support the Grand Final and make it the best experience for athletes, officials and spectators.”

“Edmonton has always been a great location for hosting world-class triathlons,” said Marisol Casado, ITU President and International Olympic Committee (IOC) member. “We appreciate the support the City of Edmonton and local organizers have given to the sport over so many years – you are a leader in Canada. The enthusiasm and commitment shown locally ensures triathlon has a healthy future in Edmonton.”

ITU executives will visit venues to be used for accommodation, training, opening, closing ceremonies and the Sport and Lifestyle EXPO. The Grand Final course is highlighted by Edmonton landmarks such as the Alberta Legislature Building, High Level Bridge, historic Garneau community and the University of Alberta.

Locally, the event will be known as TRI-EDMONTON: The Rally in the Valley. As the final race on the ITU’s 2014 World Triathlon Series calendar, the Triathlon Grand Final will attract more than 4,000 athletes, 6,000 accompanying visitors and a worldwide television audience of approximately 45 million in 160 countries.

The week-long event will feature elite, age group and junior championships as well as a parade of nations, opening and closing ceremonies and a lifestyle and sports EXPO.
