Filipino-Albertan finishes Top 10 in Olympic speed skating

Filipino-Albertan Gilmore Junio managed to finish in the top 10 of the men’s 500m speed skating event of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia on Monday.

Junio, son of Filipino immigrants now living in Calgary, clocked 35.15 seconds in Race 1 and 35.09 seconds in Race 2 for a total time of 70.25, good for 10th place finish overall.

His total time had a difference of .90 of a second against gold medalist Michel Mulder of the Netherlands (69.312).

The Dutch dominated the event held at the Adler Arena Skating Center with Jan Smeekens (69.324) taking the silver and Ronald Mulder (69.46) clinching the bronze medal.

Junio’s Team Canada mates Jamie Gregg of Edmonton landed at 11th place, William Dutton of Regina at 14th and Muncef Ouardi of Montreal at 25th in the field of 39 entries.(pinoy edmonton news with reports from sochi2014.com)
