Council approves funding for Commonwealth Stadium field upgrade
City Council voted to spend $500,000 to upgrade the field at Commonwealth Stadium. The improvements, which will be completed by May, will include the installation of flag and goal anchors and expansion of the end zones. These modifications will make the field safer for CFL players and meet requirements for the FIFA 2014 and 2015 soccer events.
City of Edmonton named a top employer
The City of Edmonton has been named as one of Alberta’s top employers for 2014. This annual competition, organized by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, recognizes Alberta employers that offer exceptional places to work. Employers were evaluated on progressive and forward-thinking programs in the areas such as physical workspace, performance management, employee communications and training and skills development.
The City of Edmonton has also been named one of Canada’s best diversity employers for 2014. Now entering its seventh year, Canada’s Best Diversity Employers recognizes employers across Canada that offer exceptional workplace diversity and inclusion programs.
City of Edmonton honoured with Standard of Excellence Award
Mayor Iveson recognized employees from Human Resources who were instrumental in the City of Edmonton receiving a Standard of Excellence Award from the New Media Institute in New York. The award, which celebrates excellence in local government innovation, singled out the City’s “Jobs” page on Facebook. The page, created in November 2012, attracts more than 39,000 people every week. Job seekers can participate in job search webinars on resume writing, the job interview process and getting hired through social media.
City Councillor receives award for diversity and inclusion work
The Edmonton Interfaith Centre for Education and Action honoured Councillor Amarjeet Sohi for his contributions in fostering understanding and respect between Edmonton’s diverse faith communities. Through his work on Racism Free Edmonton and as the lead of the Multicultural Special Council Initiative, Councillor Sohi has worked to end discrimination, promote gender equality and encourage diversity and inclusion within the city.
