Family Day Weekend in Edmonton

Spend time with those who mean the most to you this Family Day. There are a number of indoor and outdoor activities taking place that are sure to keep your whole family entertained, so get out there and have some fun! Here’s what’s happening in Edmonton over the Family Day weekend:

City Market Downtown at City Hall
Date: Saturday February 15, 2014
Time: 9am – 3pm
Location: City Hall
Admission: Free

In celebration of the Family Day weekend, entertainers from the International Street Performers Festival will be performing at the City Market Downtown at City Hall. Enjoy incredible magic and circus acts as you shop for locally produced food and handmade crafts under the sunny, warm pyramids of City Hall.

Fun on the Plaza + Swing & Skate
Date: Sunday February 16, 2014
Time: 11am – 4pm
Location: City Hall Plaza & City Room
Admission: Free

Go skating on the City Hall ice rink. Free skate and helmet rentals will be available. Play a game of street hockey, giant checkers or chess. Then warm up by an open fire. From 1 – 4pm, show off your best dance moves at Swing & Skate. Enjoy live swing, jazz and big band music featuring the Rhythm Gunners Big Band of the Royal Canadian Artillery Band inside City Hall.

Movie on the Plaza
Date: Sunday February 16, 2014
Time: 7pm
Location: Churchill Square & City Hall Plaza
Admission: Free

In celebration of Family Day and the 2014 Olympic Games, you are invited to enjoy a special outdoor showing of the movie Cool Runnings. This PG-rated film portrays the true story of a bobsledding team from Jamaica making it to the Winter Olympics. Bring your lawn chair and a warm blanket. Food trucks will be on site for those wishing to purchase snacks.

Please note: In the event of severe weather, the movie will be shown inside City Hall.

Family Day Fun in City Hall & Churchill Square
Date: Monday February 17, 2014
Time: Noon – 4pm
Location: City Hall & Churchill Square
Admission: Free

Take a twirl on the City Hall ice rink, go for a hay ride, try out a kick sled, roast bannock over an open fire and check out the Family Day games and activities on the Square. Enjoy games and activities, ice sculptures, music, roving performers, and much more! Free skate and helmet rentals will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Food trucks will be on site. The excitement continues inside City Hall with a performance of Apples & Oranges, presented by Concrete Theatre.

Please note: Skating may be cancelled in the event of poor ice conditions or severe weather. Call 311 for the most up-to-date information.

Terwillegar and Commonwealth Recreation Centres
Date: Monday February 17, 2014
Time: Noon – 4pm
Location: Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre (2051 Leger Rd.); Commonwealth Community Recreation Centre (11000 Stadium Rd.)
Cost: Regular Admission

Take part in Family Fun Day at the Terwillegar and Commonwealth Community Recreation Centres. Enjoy a fun-filled afternoon featuring activities such as fitness games, obstacles courses and more!

Move to the beat with a fun, family-friendly Zumba dance party at Commonwealth Community Recreation Centre from 2:30 – 4pm.

From noon – 2pm you can try out pick-up floor hockey at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre in Flexi Hall #3.

Edmonton Valley Zoo Family Fun Day – Arctic Ambassador Day
Date: Monday February 17, 2014
Time: Noon – 4pm
Location: Edmonton Valley Zoo (13315 Buena Vista Rd.)
Cost: Regular Admission

Bundle up your family for some Arctic Ambassador Day and Family Day fun at the Edmonton Valley Zoo. Stay warm while you make your own hot chocolate, have your face painted or participate in the Animal Families scavenger hunt. Visit the free photo booth to take home a family memory. Learn why Edmonton Valley Zoo is an Arctic Ambassador Centre for Polar Bears International.

Celebrate Family Day at the Reuse Centre
The Reuse Centre downtown is hosting a Family Day open house event. Participate in reuse crafting sessions, shop through the treasure trove of items, take a tour and learn about reuse.

Location: Reuse Centre (10004-103A Ave.)
Parking: Available behind the Reuse Centre. Parking meters are free on Family Day.

Toboggan Hills and Outdoor Ice Rinks
Take advantage of maintained toboggan hills and outdoor skating & ice rinks. Grab the toboggans and ice skates for an outdoor thrill you and your family can enjoy!

Winterscapes
Start a new Family Day tradition by creating a winterscape! Celebrate the season by creating winter-themed snow creatures, sculptures, ice ornaments and more. Learn more about winterscapes.

Edmonton Public Library
Date: Monday February 17, 2014
Time: 1 – 5pm
Cost: Free

All branches of the Edmonton Public Library are open from 1 – 5pm, excluding eplGO. Take part in a unique array of special programs and events including clown cartels, puppet shows, an Xbox Family Dance Off, storytelling, photo booths and more! View complete schedule of events.

Family Day Unplugged
Spend Family Day unplugged from technology and reconnect with your family and friends. To participate in this friendly challenge between participating cities, simply log the hours you and your family unplug this Family Day by visiting fcssaa.org and tell your story on Facebook. Transit Information
Use an ETS Day Pass to travel with your family to Family Day events. The cost of a Day Pass is $9 which allows up to four children (ages 12 and under) who are accompanied by an adult to ride all day.
