Canlubang seizes lead over Luisita

BACOLOD CITY – Defending champion Canlubang drew a pair of 49s from national reigning seniors champion Abe Avena and Rene Unson Friday to lead rival Luisita by nine points in the 21st Philippine Airlines Seniors Interclub golf team championships.

Avena made a rousing team debut by scoring one birdie against six bogeys while Unson bucked a two-point penalty for making a wrong drop on the seventh hole to power the Sugar Barons who assembled 143 points at the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club.

With Mari Hechanova counting with 45 points, the Sugar Barons now have a two-day total of 286 points.

Canlubang skipper Luigi Yulo, who did not count with 34 points, said he would like to see Rolly Viray contend for the individual crown after firing 51 points at the Binitin golf course.

To qualify for the individual title, a player must see action in both courses.

After leading the first round by a single point, Luisita found itself trailing by nine.

Francis Gaston led Luisita with 47 points, but had little support from his teammates.

Seve Roxas Chua had 44 points while Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia limped home with 42 points. Iggy Clavecilla, returning after an absence of two years, did not count with 38 points.

Manila Golf grabbed third place on the strength of 137 points from Fausto Preysler (47), Alex Prieto (45) and Manoling Chan (45). But Manila still trails Canlubang by 20 points.

Orchard slid to fourth with 262 points after tallying 125 Friday. Scorers were Joe Gonzales (43), Ryan Abdon (41) and Chito Servida (41).

Cebu Country Club slid to fifth place with 261 points.

Montito Garcia led CCC with 49 points with Jeric Hechanova and Lor Alaan adding 44 and 40, respectively.

In the Founders’ division, NOGCC Marapara seized the lead after collecting 129 points at its home course for 255 overall. The scorers were Lito Ong 45, Jude Doctora 42 and Rene Silos 42.

Alta Vista took second with 251 points after getting 123 points from Hospicio Razon (44), Edgardo Acain (42) and Antonio Sabuga (37).

Tied for third were Pueblo de Oro and Villamor.

Clifford Celdran shot one of the day’s two best scores – 50 points – to power Pueblo de Oro. Jun Quibat contributed 41 while Carlos Rubio added 37.

Villamor, on the other hand, was led by Romulo Narcida’s 42. Other scorers were Conrado Chiudian 41 and Art Clemente 39.

This year’s Interclub is being co-sponsored by CrossOver with Boeing, Philippines Graphic, Stargate Media (People Asia) and Rogue as corporate backers. Also lending support are Airbus, Business Mirror, One Mega Group (Travel Now), Philippine Broadcasting Corporation, Manila Broadcasting Corporation and Manila Bulletin.
