Filipino-Albertan speed skater Gilmore Junio has emerged as the favorite to carry the Canadian flag on Sunday’s closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
Junio garnered 42.75 percent of the votes cast on CBC’s poll as of this writing.
He grabbed the limelight when he generously gave his spot to Denny Morrison in the 1000-metre event last week. An inspired Morrison won a silver medal, his first individual medal.
Women’s ice hockey team gold medalist Marie-Philip Poulin followed at second place with 15.04% while women’s curling team gold medalist Jennifer Jones trailed at third place with 11.75%.
Elvin Wegner commented on CBC’s website saying ” Every single athlete on the list is leaving with an amazing souvenir… an olympic medal… something they will cherish forever… Except for 1 … Gilmore. He stands for everything that being Canadian stands for and every Canadian should strive towards…. Canada first… ME second… Probably the most selfless act ever seen at the Olympics and as worthy of such an honor as it may never be seen again. Very Very Proud Canadian!!”.
In another comment, Jennifer Hord said “I have to give it to Gilmore. It’s just the Canadian thing to do… such a selfless act. It’s just the kind of thing that really represents Canada as a whole. Yeah we had our great Olympic moments, like defending our golds in bobsleigh, hockey, mens moguls… yeah Denny Morrison picked up two medals this year… yeah our figure skating team did us proud… and yeah, Dara is a great representative for the memory of Sarah Burke. But Gilmore Junio is the epitomy of what it means to be a Canadian, in my opinion.
I think Jennifer Jones is my second choice though. That girl and her entire team KILLED it, going undefeated this year. That’s an amazing olympic feat right there”.
