Edmonton’s First Online Census Begins

The City of Edmonton’s 2014 census is about to get underway and for the first time Edmontonians will be able to count themselves in online.

Every residence in Edmonton will receive a letter in the mail with a secure access code and directions on how to enter their household census information online. The online part of the Edmonton 2014 Census begins April 10 at 8am and will end April 27 at 8pm.

“The online census is an easy way for residents to complete the census at a time that is convenient for them,” said Laura Kennedy, Director of Elections and Census.

Answering the questions will take only a few minutes and can be done from any computer connected to the Internet. The information collected is confidential and stored in a secure database located in Canada. All questions will be asked of households as they were on April 1, 2014, ensuring data consistency with the previous census.

The online census questionnaire includes questions about the number of residents per household, the primary language spoken if not English, marital status and the type of transportation used for getting from home to work.

“Accurate census information is vital to delivering City services,” said Kennedy. “With reliable numbers, we can more accurately plan for the services, facilities and infrastructure citizens need. It also ensures that the City of Edmonton receives appropriate funding from other orders of government.”

On May 10, 2014, Census workers start door to door collection of census data from Edmontonians who did not take part in the online census.

Residents can find out more about the census and the census questions at edmonton.ca/census or by calling 311.
