Edmonton Welcomes Recruit Class 140

Sixteen firefighter recruits and one K9 recruit were celebrated on May 13, 2014 as the City of Edmonton and Edmonton Fire Rescue Services welcomed its 140th recruit class.

Hundreds of family members, friends and fellow firefighters congratulated the new class at a ceremony held at City Hall, during which firefighter recruits were presented with their badges, caps and diplomas and the K9 recruit was presented with his badge and collar.

“This is an outstanding class of future leaders for our department and the City of Edmonton,” said Fire Chief Ken Block. “They follow a great tradition of men and women who have proudly served our city and protected the safety of our residents.”

The graduation ceremony culminated a 12-week intense training program for the recruits, which took place at the department’s training academy. The recruits received extensive classroom and practical learning in fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous material response, medical situations, river rescue, and motor vehicle crash response.

Probationary firefighters are now assigned to one of the city’s 27 fire stations where they will gain experience from senior firefighters and captains.
