International Responsible Hospitality Conference highlights Edmonton’s reputation

The City of Edmonton will showcase its vibrant, well-managed nighttime economy at the International Responsible Hospitality Conference on May 21 and 22, 2014.

The conference, hosted by Responsible Hospitality Edmonton in partnership with Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission, will examine the complexity of the late-night economy and how community, industry, regulations and policing all have an impact on safety and vibrancy.

“Edmonton is a leader in the management of strong, safe and vibrant hospitality destinations,” says Angela Turner, Program Manager of Responsible Hospitality Edmonton. “This conference allows us the opportunity to showcase what we do and learn from others around the world.”

The conference will showcase success stories and creative problem-solving, and will feature high-caliber speakers from across the globe. Keynote presenters include Paul Davies, (UK Purple Flag program), Mark Bellis, (Centre for Public Health, Liverpool) and Captain Robert Duvall (Las Vegas Police Department).

The conference is designed for public health, public administrators, public officials, club owners, police and enforcement agencies involved with social gatherings. Attendees will explore information, research, policy and practice in combination with the latest tools and resources.

“Edmonton’s nightlife is a major contributor to the city’s economy,” says John Rose, Chief Economist at the City of Edmonton. “Specifically, the late-night economy contributed over $686 million to Edmonton’s total economic output in 2010, with an estimated attendance of over 20 million patrons and 5,800 full-time equivalent jobs.”

The goal of Responsible Hospitality Edmonton is to promote a safe and thriving late-night environment in the city by planning, policing and managing the many aspects of hospitality areas throughout the city.
