- The Government of Canada is providing $3.8M to support the establishment of the Canadian Beef Centre of Excellence in Calgary. The facility is intended to support the Canadian beef and veal industry through training and product innovation.
- The Taber Juice and Dry Grocery Plant, located in Taber, is scheduled to close permanently on August 29, 2014, resulting in the loss of 38 full-time positions
- The Grande Prairie Livestock Market in Grande Prairie has closed, forcing area livestock producers to seek new marketing methods for their cattle
- The Calgary Board of Education will spend $16.5M to restore the Elbow Park School, which was damaged in the 2013 floods, reversing an earlier decision to demolish the school and build a replacement
- The Government of Canada is providing more than $31M to the Calgary Homeless Foundation over five-years to support projects that prevent and reduce homelessness
- The Town of Coaldale is moving to switch police services from the Lethbridge Regional Police Service to a contract with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, following approval from the Government of Alberta
- Brazeau County has awarded a $3M contract to BTO Contracting for road grading during 2014
- Lethbridge City Council has approved $1.48M for the next phase of construction on the Lethbridge Regional Police Services Headquarters renovations
- A $6.8M contract to upgrade and widen 43rd Street North in Lethbridge was recently awarded to deGraaf Excavating
- The City of Grande Prairie has approved a $9.5M renovation project to re-open the Leisure Centre
- Buffalo Trail Public Schools Regional Division No. 28 is expecting to start construction in the spring of 2015 on a $10.8M school in Paradise Valley
- XR Resources is moving into a vacant industrial facility north of High River, the former home of Western Biodiesel. The company plans to produce sulphur-free diesel fuel and additives from natural gas feedstocks.
- Chinook`s Edge School Division No. 73 is partnering with Red Deer College and three local businesses to provide high school students with work experience that will also earn them college credits
- Olds College and Shunda Construction held an official ground-breaking on July 3, 2014 for the $30M Centennial Village Student Residence, which is expected to open in September 2015
- A recent report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information found that Alberta gained 2,697 nurses between 2009 and 2013, but acquiring full-time employment in the field can take up to five years
- The Town of Ponoka is experiencing an increase in both commercial and residential development permit applications, both in numbers and dollar value
- The Bentley Hutterite Colony suffered a $5M loss after fire destroyed a large hog barn and killed an estimated 4,200 animals on July 7, 2014
- Canada Post is planning to eliminate door-to-door mail delivery for more than 8,500 addresses in Strathcona County starting in 2015 as part of a national reduction in mail service
- Living Waters Catholic Schools, the Town of Whitecourt, Woodlands County and NorQuest College are partnering to build and operate a community Learning Campus in Whitecourt. Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2014.
