Migrante Alberta has organized a Temporary Foreign Workers’ Appreciation Day on September 1, Canada’s Labour Day.

“It is the day that we commemorate the struggles of the Canadian working people and commit to protect all the gains and victories that they got for all Canadians. For us this is also the day that we recognize the temporary foreign workers as part of the Canadian working class. That their struggles for living wage, better working conditions and work security and protection are the same as their Canadian counterparts,” said Migrante spokesperson Marco Luciano in a statement emailed to Pinoy Edmonton News.

“The difference between the two is the temporary worker’s resident status. Their temporary status puts them in a very vulnerable and exploitable situation. This day we call to fight and protect the rights of all workers. That includes the right of temporary workers to choose to be a permanent resident in Canada,” he added.

Luciano said that Migrante Alberta is one with the Temporary Foreign Workers Support Coalition in organizing the Temporary Foreign Workers’ Appreciation Day. A family picnic for all temporary foreign workers, their friends and families. There will be speeches, cultural performers, artists, children’s corner and lots of food. It is free for everyone.
