Suspect charged in violent break and enter and shooting
Police ask for public’s assistance to identify remaining suspects
Edmonton Police Service Northeast Division detectives have charged a suspect in connection with a violent break and enter and shooting that took place at a north Edmonton residence in June.
At approximately 10:04 p.m. on Monday, June 2, 2014, police responded to a weapons complaint at a residence in the area of 113A Street and 136 Avenue. It was reported that several males allegedly forced their way into the home and searched the residence. In the process, the 44-year-old female resident suffered injuries while escaping the home, and the 48-year-old male resident was shot and suffered a life-threatening injury. The males fled the residence and were last seen westbound in the alley. EMS treated and transported the couple to hospital.
Over the course of the investigation detectives determined that the victims of the break and enter were not intended targets, nor were they involved in any criminal activity. Through numerous witnesses and forensic information, a suspect in the shooting was identified. On Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, police executed search warrants at three Edmonton addresses connected to the suspect, and recovered firearms, ammunition, a quantity of drugs (crack cocaine, marijuana and prescription pills) and cash.
Steven Christopher Paul, 26, was charged with numerous firearms offences includingdischarge firearm with intent reckless to life, assault with a weapon, aggravated assault,criminal negligence causing bodily harm, robbery with a firearm, break and enter to a dwelling,face masked with intent, possession of the proceeds of crime, and possession for the purposes of trafficking (x2). The accused has been remanded and is expected to appear in court on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014.
Police continue to investigate and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the two other males involved in the violent incident.
