Cebu CC guns for PAL Ladies’ title today

CEBU City – With momentum on its side, Cebu Country Club tries to put together another superlative effort today and spoil Manila Southwoods-Masters’ date with history in the ninth Philippine Airlines Interclub Championship at Alta Vista here.

After getting a one-over-par 73 worth 53 points from tiny Lois Kaye Go on Thursday, the Cebu CC bets have suddenly assumed the role of favorites as they try to keep SW-Masters at bay in the final 18 holes today.

SW-Masters has not trailed going into the final round of this tournament for the last three years and would need a strong start to pull even and make a game out of it during the final matches.

Sofia Chabon, who fired 51 points, and Annika Cedo, who opened with 48 on Thursday, will again continue to lead the Carmona-based squad, which will be playing just seven ladies after Miya Legaspi failed to make the trip because of academic commitments.

Cebu CC has a full roster and will try to draw the same output from Mary Kim Hong, who contributed 51 in the opening round. Junia Gabasa, who scored an opening 47, will be a key cog for Cebu CC.

Lora Roberto, who came close to winning the Philippine Ladies Amateur title in the last decade, and Missy Legaspi, are the other reliable mainstays for SW-Masters.

Del Monte, which finished second to SW-Masters in two of the last three years, is practically out of it all being 32 points off the pace. Rookie squad Alta Vista is a far fourth with a 228 total.

Meanwhile, a two-horse race has shaped up in the Founders Division with Valley Golf holding a slim seven-point lead over Alabang with a 243 total after first round play yesterday.

Former junior vet Kyla Nocum assembled 48 points with Isabel Miravite shooting 43 to pace Valley Golf. Jocelyn Sevilla fired 41 points and Valley also counted the 39 of Violeta Pegels, the 38 of Cielo Fregil and the 34 of Dina de Jesus.

Evangeline Apuhin’s 24 and the 21 of Ma. Consuelo Conti were discarded by Valley.

Alabang got 46 points from Rita Horan with Marilyn Reyes shooting 43. The other scorers that counted for the Muntinlupa-based squad were the 41 of Eun Sil-jang, the 39 of Jocelyn Garcia and the 33 and 32 of Christine Popp and Joan Morales, respectively.

Sta. Elena Golf and Manila Southwoods-Legends tied at 200 with Mactan Island running fifth another seven shots behind.

The event is sponsored by Boeing, Airbus, B/E Aerospace, Diamond Hotel
Phils., Eastgate Publishing, Bluewater Maribago and Mareco Broadcasting Network (Crossover).(PAL)
