2014 Construction Wrap Up

City delivers on its commitment to road infrastructure

The City of Edmonton’s 2014 road construction season is coming to an end, with a wrap-up event on the newly completed 63 Avenue, once considered the worst road in Edmonton.

“In 2014, the City renewed its commitment to improving Edmonton’s road infrastructure, with an investment of $424.1 million in 178 arterial road, bridge and interchange, and neighbourhood projects,” said Byron Nicholson, Acting Branch Manager for Roads Design and Construction.

The two-year, $10.6 million 63 Avenue reconstruction project demonstrates the City’s ongoing commitment to repairing roadways. In 2014, work included the eastbound lane between 99 Street and 104 Street and rehabilitation of Allendale Road between 104 Street and 106 Street.

“It’s been a big year for road construction in Edmonton and we are happy that one of our biggest projects, 63 Avenue, is open to traffic on time and on budget,” said Nicholson. “We thank drivers and area businesses for their patience over the past two seasons.”

In April 2014, Mayor Iveson affirmed the City’s commitment to road infrastructure with the allocation of an extra $27.1 million from the 2014 budget to address additional arterial roadway and neighbourhood roads in 2014 and 2015.

The 2014 road infrastructure investment included:

  • Arterial roads: $85 million (38 projects)
  • Bridges and interchanges: $179 million (4 projects)
  • Neighbourhood Renewal: $133 million (85 projects)
  • Additional arterial roads: $10 million (25 projects)
  • Additional neighbourhood roads: $6.3 million (26 projects)

The remaining $10.8 million from City Council will be invested in additional paving locations in 2015, bringing the total investment to $424.1 million.

Major road projects completed in 2014 include:

  • 63 Avenue road rehabilitation
  • Guardian Road/Lewis Estates Boulevard roadway widening
  • 23 Avenue and 34 Street arterial roadway widening

The City also completed reconstructions in five mature neighbourhoods:

  • Argyll
  • Delton
  • Grovenor
  • King Edward Park
  • North Glenora

Continuing multi-year projects include:

  • 102 Avenue over Groat Road Bridge (year 1 of 2)
  • Walterdale Bridge replacement project (year 2 of 3)
  • QEII Hwy/41 Avenue SW interchange (year 2 of 3)
  • 112 Avenue rehabilitation (50 St to 68 St) (year 1 of 2)
  • Neighbourhood reconstructions in Cromdale, Glenora, Hazeldean and Laurier Heights
