Special weather statement in effect for:
- City of Edmonton – St. Albert – Sherwood Park
Significant snowfall possible this weekend.
After above-normal temperatures for this time of year in much of Central and Northern Alberta, temperatures will return to normal this weekend and this change in temperatures will be accompanied by snowfall.
On Saturday a low pressure system will track from Grande Cache to Coronation and then into Saskatchewan, accompanied by falling snow. The precise track of this system is still uncertain, but the most likely corridor for significant snowfall appears at this time to stretch from Peace River to Slave Lake to Lloydminster. Snowfall totals approaching 10 centimetres are expected. However, the strength of this system is also uncertain and, as a result, higher snowfall amounts are possible. By the time Saturday evening rolls around, all regions in Central and Northern Alberta except for the far northeast should see a blanket of fresh snow. The Capital region should receive between 5 and 10 centimetres, as the heavier snowfall will occur north of the region.
This system will be monitored closely by Environment Canada meteorologists throughout the day today and into the weekend.
The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.
