City Council Appoints New Police Commissioner

City Council has appointed Karen MacKenzie to the Edmonton Police Commission for the term January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2016.

“I am pleased to welcome our newest Police Commissioner,” said Mayor Don Iveson. “Karen’s experience will be a great addition to the Edmonton Police Commission and I know she will be an integral part of the team of people working together to ensure the safety and security of Edmontonians.”

Named one of 100 Top Businesswomen in Edmonton in 2014, MacKenzie has extensive business experience and is the co-founder of a consulting company that has a global reach as well as an Aboriginal resource development company.

Mackenzie’s current and past board memberships are numerous including the Premier’s Advisory Council for Economic Security for Aboriginal Women; City of Edmonton Homeless Commission; Alberta Women Entrepreneurs; Mayor’s Task Force to End Homelessness; Council of Elders for Edmonton Catholic Schools; and Women Building Futures.

The Edmonton Police Commission oversees the Edmonton Police Service. It allocates funds provided by City Council, establishes policies for efficient and effective policing and ensures the Police Service has sufficient staff to carry out its duties.
