- The City of Edmonton has approved hiring for 35 full-time positions for the Edmonton Police Service during the 2015 budget year
- The Alberta Forest Products Association says that the forest industry is expanding production and in a hiring mode, with numerous jobs available. The industry is prepared to absorb some former oil employees if there is a slowdown in the energy sector.
- Talisman Energy, based in Calgary, recently agreed to a $15B takeover by Repsol, a Spanish energy company. The combined entity is expected to have about 27,000 employees in more than 50 countries.
- The Aspen View School Board has approved a new $33.85M secondary school in Athabasca, following an agreement with Alberta Education. The school district can now move forward with tenders for a construction management contract.
- Cenovus Energy has implemented a hiring freeze for 2015 in response to lower oil prices, with a strategy to reallocate staff resources as required to meet growth projections and contractual obligations
- The Town of Bonnyville is dedicating $17.8M to capital spending in the 2015 budget, including $10.8M for paving projects and funding for the infrastructure replacement program
- Earl’s Kitchen and Bar is scheduled to re-open in Grande Prairie in early 2015, after delays postponed the date from October 2014. The restaurant was closed for repairs after a fire in December 2013.
- The Municipal District of Greenview has finalized the budget for 2015, with approvals for $12.8M in road maintenance and construction, $6.8M for two water treatment plants and $12.7M for two fire hall replacements
- The City of Cold Lake has passed a $22M capital budget for 2015. Among the projects included in the budget are $14M for facility and infrastructure improvements and $5M in roadway construction.
- Husky Energy and BP have started production at their Sunrise oil sands project north of Fort McMurray. The project is expected to be developed in three phases over an estimated lifespan of 50 years.
- The former Government of Alberta Provincial Building in High River is slated for complete demolition by February 15, 2015. A new $20M replacement facility is projected for completion by mid-2016.
- The City of Leduc has passed a budget for 2015 that includes money for two new RCMP members, a youth outreach worker and $14.7M for major roadway projects
- Canadian National Railway is hiring approximately 20 to 30 conductors for the Jasper area in 2015 and at least 500 new conductors in Western Canada
- Irwin’s Safety & Industrial Labour Services, a safety services company, has opened for business in Peace River after acquiring one of its competitors, Audits & Safety Services. The former Audits & Safety Services staff will transition over to the new company.
