Ailing Trees on Whyte Ave to be Replaced

Whyte Ave Tree Removal

To ensure the continued health and longevity of the city’s urban forest, a number of trees will be removed from the median of Whyte Avenue between 96 and 99 Street, beginning the week of May 11. City crews will replant the trees later this year.

Twenty-six American Elm trees will be removed due to declining health brought on by drought, pest infestation, and pollution from traffic and construction. Median reconstruction and repaving of the three-block stretch will take place from June to August.

In keeping with the historic landscape of the area, 45 American Elm trees will be replanted on the median in September. The removal, construction and replanting concludes a project that began in 2010.

The urban forest is one of Edmonton’s greatest assets. The City is committed to its care, preservation and expansion by replanting all trees and improving the growing environment to ensure long-term sustainability of replacement trees.

Intermittent minor traffic disruptions will occur during off-peak hours (9am to 3pm) while the work is completed.
