Resource royalty review in best interest of Alberta

The Alberta Federation of Labour is looking forward to participating in the long-overdue review of the province’s resource royalty rates.

Since being sworn in as the province’s first NDP premier, Rachel Notley has reconfirmed that her government will conduct a review of the rates corporations pay for the province’s natural resources. Over the past five years, the Alberta Federation of Labour has uncovered damning evidence that successive conservative regimes have allowed these rates to remain far below those of other provinces, states and countries with comparable resources.

“Albertans have been getting ripped off. Reviewing these rates is the first step to righting a major wrong,” AFL president Gil McGowan said. “We’re looking forward to being a part of this review. We’ve spent years exposing the loopholes in the current royalty regime, exposing the giveaways to big corporations, and informing the public about this issue. We’re glad that Premier Notley seems committed to conducting an impartial review, and look forward to presenting the evidence we’ve gathered.”
