TWO ALBERTA NEW DEMOCRATS DECLARED ELECTED FOLLOWING RECOUNTS
CALGARY – Diana Batten has defeated Tyler Shandro in Calgary-Acadia and Nagwan Al-Guneid has unseated Whitney Issik in Calgary-Glenmore following recounts of the two ridings’ results over the weekend.
“I’m excited to be joining the largest Opposition caucus in history to be a voice for public healthcare in Alberta, affordability for families, and a strong economy,” said Batten, a registered nurse and former research scientist.
“I’m committed to being a voice for Calgary, our energy sector, and for economic development,” said Al-Guneid, an energy sector leader. “I’m deeply honoured by the trust the people of our community have placed in me and our party.”
The Alberta NDP elected 38 members on May 29, sweeping the Edmonton seats and winning a majority of the seats in Calgary with 15.
Shandro is Danielle Smith’s Attorney General and a prominent figure in the UCP under both her and Jason Kenney. Issik at various times has been Minister of Environment and Parks and Associate Minister for the Status of Women.
