News Release
Alberta NDP Leader Rachel Notley issued the following statement in response to the introduction of the federal government’s Canadian Sustainable Jobs Act:
“The introduction of this Act represents a missed opportunity and highlights how ineffective the UCP has been in standing up for Alberta’s industry and protecting our leadership in the energy sector. This falls squarely on Danielle Smith and the UCP who were not at the table advocating for Alberta jobs and investment. Now, the federal government is investing in multi-billion-dollar infrastructure projects elsewhere in the country, such as icebreakers and shipbuilding in Quebec and electric battery facilities in Ontario. Meanwhile, we’ve seen nothing for Alberta.
“To make matters worse, Danielle Smith plans to add more uncertainty and instability with her threats to use the Sovereignty Act, risking more jobs and investment.
“Alberta can continue to be a global energy leader for decades to come, but we need the provincial government working with industry and other levels of government in the interests of Albertans. There are billions of dollars in investment looking for decarbonization opportunities, Alberta must create the stability and certainty to capitalize on that investment. We can remain a leader and export that expertise to the world, but we must act together and we must act now.
“To start, we must create investment and regulatory certainty in clean tech and CCUS and other opportunities. We need to invest in our people by building the NAIT Advanced Skills Training Centre, locate the Canada Growth Fund Head Office in Calgary to position Alberta as the country’s leader in cleantech and energy, and finalize contracts for difference to get CCUS projects off the ground.
“These are just a few of the concrete steps that can be taken to immediately create jobs in Alberta. But we also need a government that is focused on the future and is willing to put in the hard work to create long-term, good-paying jobs for future generations.”
