Getting around during the Servus Edmonton Marathon

On Sunday, August 18, thousands of local, national and international marathon runners will take to city streets for the 2024 Servus Edmonton Marathon. Celebrating its 33rd year, the marathon will wind through a number of historic neighbourhoods and past Edmonton’s scenic River Valley. The race is a 2025 Boston Marathon qualifier.

Race air quality information and race updates

The Servus Edmonton Marathon will follow recommendations of provincial health partners and Environment Canada to ensure the safety of participants. Please refer to the Servus Edmonton Marathon website (EdmontonMarathon.ca/faq), and/or their X (@Edm_Marathon) and Instagram (@EdmontonMarathon) social media accounts for updates.

Road closures and traffic delays

The race route starts and finishes at the Edmonton Convention Centre, located at 9797 Jasper Avenue. The following road closures will be in effect:

Saturday, August 17 at 6 a.m. to Sunday, August 18 at 8 p.m.:
Full closure of Jasper Avenue, from 97 Street to 99 Street
Partial closure of 97 Street, from Jasper Avenue to 101A Avenue
Sunday, August 18, from 5:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.:
Full closure of 97 Street, from Jasper Avenue to 101A Avenue
Full closure of Jasper Avenue, from 82 Street to 124 Street
Full closure 124 Street, from Jasper Avenue to 102 Avenue
Eastbound lanes of 102 Avenue, from 124 Street to 138 Street will be closed. Westbound lanes will accommodate single lane, two-way traffic, however major travel delays may occur.
Major travel delays expected for 142 Street, from 91 Avenue to 100 Avenue.

Expect major traffic delays during these times. Please plan ahead, as driving across the race course could take up to an hour.

Crossing the route

Expect major traffic delays crossing the race route:

Jasper Avenue, from 95 Street to 124 Street
102 Avenue, from 124 Street to 138 Street
The longest travel delays will occur on August 18 between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. for those crossing the route at Jasper Avenue, between 95 Street and 124 Street, particularly at 100 Street, 101 Street, 105 Street, 109 Street, 112 Street and 116 Street.

Course marshals and police officers will be stationed at intersections to assist with traffic crossings when a break in the runners safely allows, however, this may take up to an hour.

Suggested alternate routes of travel

To detour around the race route, use 104 Avenue, 107 Avenue, River Valley Road, Groat Road or 75 Street/Wayne Gretzky Drive.

Neighbourhood access

Many areas of the race route will allow local access only. Please plan ahead and expect delays.

Impacts to downtown neighbourhoods east of the Edmonton Convention Centre will end by 10:30 a.m. when roads will reopen. Impacts to downtown neighbourhoods west of the Edmonton Convention Centre will end by 4 p.m.

Residential streets in the neighbourhoods of McCauley, Cromdale, Virginia Park, Bellevue, Highlands, Beverly Heights, Rundle Heights, Glenora, Crestwood, and Parkview will be impacted. Residents are asked not to park on the route and to follow directions from race course marshals.

Parking

Parking restrictions on the event route will be in effect. Please obey all posted signs. Illegally parked vehicles will be ticketed and towed.

Access to a number of parking facilities will be impacted from Saturday, August 17 at 6 a.m. to Sunday, August 18 at 4 p.m. Parking facilities impacted include:

Canada Place East and West Parkades
Stanley A. Milner Library Parkade
Sun Life Parkade
KRP Tower
Diamond and Impark lots on 99 Street, south of Jasper Avenue
Fairmont Hotel Macdonald
DoubleTree by Hilton hotel
Surface lots along 101A Avenue, from 96 Street to 97 Street

Edmonton Transit Service detours

All downtown routes will be detoured and some bus stops will be closed during the marathon as follows:

Saturday, August 17
All day: Routes 2, 5, 111 and 900X
Sunday, August 18
5 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.: Routes 1, 2, 5, 8, 9, 110X, 511, 523, 701, 900X and 901
5 to 10:30 p.m.: Route 101
3:30 to 9 p.m.: Routes 2, 5, 111 and 900X

ETS riders are encouraged to plan ahead using the trip planner or Google maps and to leave extra travel time. Regular fares apply.
