Edmonton’s spring waste collection schedule starts on April 15

Public Service Announcement

Spring waste collection changes start soon

Edmonton’s spring waste collection schedule starts on April 15 for residents receiving curbside collection. Green food scraps carts switch to weekly collection from every two weeks, while black garbage carts continue to be collected every two weeks. Weekly recycling collection continues.

Collecting food scraps carts weekly throughout the spring and summer reduces odours and allows for more space in carts when residents are disposing of increased yard waste.

Yard Waste Collection
Spring collection also means yard waste collection days are around the corner. Between April 21 and June 16, every curbside residence will receive two yard waste collection days, each occurring on a Monday.

Edmontonians can find collection dates by downloading the WasteWise app or visiting edmonton.ca/WasteWise. Residents can print a calendar from the website, call 311 to request a printed copy be mailed at no charge, or visit a local Edmonton Public Library branch to have one printed for a small fee of $0.50 or less.

Please set out yard waste in see-through plastic or double-ply paper bags on your seasonal yard waste collection days. Keep bags light enough to lift with one arm. There is no bag or bundle limit, so residents can set out as many as they need.

Eco Stations and Big Bin Events
On April 1, Eco Stations moved to summer operating hours and are open seven days a week from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. until November. Eco Stations are convenient waste drop-off sites for your batteries, electronics, household hazardous waste and more. For more information visit edmonton.ca/EcoStations.

Big Bin Events and Free Eco Station Weekends will also return, starting May 3 and running until the end of September. Big Bin Events accept waste that cannot be set out for regular collection, such as old couches, chairs, mattresses and appliances free of charge. Visit edmonton.ca/BigBinEvents for a full list of events.

Spring Thaw and Bales of Straw
With spring just around the corner, the City is hosting Spring Thaw and Bales of Straw events at several tobogganing hills. At these events, residents are able to collect up to six straw bales for their yard at no charge.

Straw bales have many uses for residents, including mulching, home composting, animal bedding and even straw bale gardening. These events also eliminate the costs of moving, hauling and composting the straw. Events will be held on:

Saturday, April 12
Queen Elizabeth Park: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Emily Murphy Park: 10 – 11 a.m.
Gallagher Park: Noon – 3 p.m.

Sunday, April 13
Rundle Park (ACT Hill): 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Rundle Park (North Hill): 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Saturday, April 19
Queen Elizabeth Park: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Residents are responsible for loading, securing and moving personal straw bales. Please come prepared with gloves, wagons, tie-downs, tarp or other necessary equipment. Visit edmonton.ca/SpringThaw for more event information.
