Government of Alberta Updates

Updating rules for upcoming elections

We are proposing important updates in the Municipal Affairs Statutes Amendment Act to the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA) this spring to improve accessibility and transparency in Alberta elections.
The proposed updates include allowing for elector assistance terminals in local
elections, clearer recount and withdrawal rules and protections for Jasper residents’
voting rights after last summer’s wildfires.
If passed, these changes will ensure a more accessible, transparent and fair election
process, empowering all Albertans to participate fully in local elections.

Refocusing health care: Patient focused funding

The cost of health care continues to rise annually.
With a growing population and an increase in more complex of health care needs,
we’re looking at new and innovative ways to allocate funds to different parts of the
health care system to get the best value for your taxpayer dollars.
With Acute Care Alberta now fully operational, we’re exploring reforms to acute care funding through a patient-focused funding model. This funding model is based on the idea of “money following the patient.”, meaning funding provided to health care facilities is centered around activity levels.
We’re funding more surgeries than ever, setting a record with 304,595 surgeries
completed in in 2023-24, and with 310,000 surgeries expected to have been completed in 2024-25, it is crucial that funding models evolve to keep pace with the growing demand and complexity of services.

Proposed legislation: Responding to the changing education system

If passed, amendments to the Education Act would reflect changes in the education
landscape and respond to feedback from education partners and Albertans.
This would include:

  • Reflecting the wide range of programming and school choice independent schools
    provide for families
  • Strengthening democratic accountability
  • Increasing clarity and efficiency in the teacher discipline process
  • Aligning school board and francophone regional authority joint use and planning
    agreements with their municipal counterparts
  • Allowing displaced Jasper residents to vote and seek election in municipal and school
    board elections
