Statement of Migrante Alberta on the tragedy at the Lapu-Lapu event in Vancouver

Migrante Alberta stands in solidarity with our community as we mourn the tragic events that occurred during the Lapu-Lapu Day Festival in Vancouver. A day meant for celebration and unity has become one of sorrow.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the families grieving their loved ones, the survivors, and everyone affected by this unfortunate incident and we extend our sincere condolences and unwavering support. Originally intended to embrace resilience, bravery, and community spirit, the festival was sadly overshadowed by sadness.

This occasion holds special significance as the Filipino diaspora comes together to celebrate their heritage and community. It offers an opportunity to reconnect with their homeland, sharing the joy and richness of Filipino culture.

As part of the migrant and working-class communities, we understand the importance of such gatherings in our lives. We mourn not only the individuals we’ve lost but also the shared suffering in our community, which calls for time, care, and collective solidarity to heal.

We express gratitude towards the families, workers, community members, and first responders who demonstrated bravery and compassion during this challenging time. Their dedication and support in adversity are highly admired.

We demand for a prompt and thorough investigation into this tragic event and appeal to the Philippine consulate in Vancouver to provide immediate support to those affected. Healing is a collective journey, and we urge those impacted to seek help together.
