United Conservatives Surging in Support as Nenshi Clings to Dubious Poll

(EDMONTON, AB) MAY 30, 2025: A recent Janet Brown poll commissioned by the CBC shows Alberta’s United Conservative Party surging ahead of the NDP with a commanding 14-point lead. The poll shows the UCP sitting at 53 per cent province-wide among decided voters, while the NDP trails at just 39 per cent under Naheed Nenshi’s leadership.

“This poll confirms what we’re hearing on the ground: Albertans trust the United Conservatives to cut taxes, keep communities safe, and fight for Alberta’s future,” said Naresh Bhardwaj, UCP Candidate for Edmonton-Ellerslie. “While the NDP remains focused on its activist base, we’re focused on delivering results for families.”

Faced with questions from CityNews about the Janet Brown poll, NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi attempted to downplay the numbers by citing an Environics poll that supposedly showed the NDP ahead. But it turns out the poll was:

  1. Eight weeks old — not from last week, as Nenshi claimed,
  2. Commissioned by the Alberta Federation of Labour, a top NDP supporter,
  3. Unweighted, meaning it doesn’t reflect actual voter demographics, and
  4. Showed only a 3-point lead, not the 6-point advantage Nenshi claimed

The AFL poll even over-sampled NDP-friendly public sector workers, who made up 43 per cent of respondents . Despite the bias, the NDP still couldn’t break away from the UCP!

Nenshi’s continued drop in support comes as he’s finally seeking a seat in the legislature, more than 11 months after becoming leader. His decision to run in Edmonton-Strathcona, traditionally one of the safest NDP seat in Alberta, raises questions about whether even he questions his ability to win a seat and re-raises the issue of why no caucus member has been willing to step aside for their party leader.

“Albertans see through this kind of desperate spin,” said Bhardwaj. “The more Albertans get to know Nenshi, the less they trust him.” (UCP News Release)
