Celebrate and explore Edmonton’s beautiful river valley on International Trails Day
Come explore Edmonton’s extensive trail system this International Trails Day, June 7, using the City’s Discover YEG Map. International Trails Day is celebrated on the first Saturday in June and is a global event to promote the benefits of trails and encourage use. In Edmonton, we’re highlighting our River Valley Parks and the importance of green spaces for recreation, health and connection with nature.
Did you know Edmonton has one of the most expansive urban trail systems in Canada? With a mix of 92 kilometres of paved and 93 kilometres of unpaved paths, these maintained routes link parks across the city through the Ribbon of Green that is the Edmonton River Valley.

Trail safety
Remember to stay on designated trails to prevent damage to ecologically sensitive areas. Check the weather and trail conditions before heading out and obey any trail closures in effect. Report concerns about trails to 311 to do your part in keeping these spaces enjoyable and safe for everyone.
Whether you are dog walking, running, cycling, scooting or hiking through the trails, practice good trail etiquette:
Stay to the right side and let others pass on the left who are faster than you.
Bicycles and scooters must be at a speed where they maintain full control to perform a stop if the need arises safely at all times.
Keep dogs on a leash. This includes parking lots near off-leash areas. Dog owners are liable for any damages to persons or property caused by their dogs, so keep yourself, your dog, other trail users and the local wildlife safe.
Edmonton is home to one of the largest urban parkland systems in North America, with hundreds of kilometres of maintained multi-use trails that wind through the North Saskatchewan River Valley and beyond. These trails connect more than 20 major parks and numerous natural areas, weaving together a mosaic of ecological, cultural and recreational spaces across the city.
Edmonton’s trail network is part of this national celebration. It also contributes to the broader River Valley Alliance vision and the Trans Canada Trail, the world’s longest network of multi-use recreational trails.
