Extreme heat response activated today

News Release

Extreme heat response activated today

The City of Edmonton is activating its extreme weather response for extreme heat to help keep vulnerable people safe during the expected hot weather in the coming days. The activation starts today at 9 a.m. and is expected to end on Saturday, August 2 at 9 a.m. The response may be extended if extreme heat conditions continue.

The extreme heat response is activated when the forecast is anticipated to have daytime temperatures of 29 degrees Celsius or higher during the day and lows of 14 degrees Celsius or higher during the night for at least three days in a row.

During extreme heat, helping people avoid dehydration is very important. Providing access to drinking water and cool places where people can take a break from the heat is essential to the City’s extreme weather response.

Water Stations
Access to potable water remains available 24 hours a day at 28 water stations attached to fire hydrants across the city. A complete list of water stations is available here.

Additional measures
All Peace Officers will carry water bottles for distribution to vulnerable people in need.
Anyone needing a break from the heat may go to open City facilities, including libraries, pools and recreation centres. City facilities will also provide free bottled water and N95 masks. A list of City facilities is available on our website.

What Edmontonians can do to help
We encourage Edmontonians to check in on older family, friends and neighbours. Edmontonians who are concerned about someone outside can help by calling:
211 and press 3 for the 24/7 Crisis Diversion team. They can assist individuals who may be in distress and can provide transportation to social service agencies.
911 in cases of emergency.

Sector Emergency Response
The City’s extreme weather response supplements existing measures implemented by the Sector Emergency Response group, a collaboration of more than 25 agencies working together to ensure Edmonton’s most vulnerable people are safe during adverse weather conditions.

The extreme weather response implements City Policy C620 to ensure the
health and safety of all Edmontonians, particularly those who are vulnerable to extreme weather conditions.
