Mayoral Candidates Join Harman Kandola’s Call to Address Election Day Conflict with Diwali

EDMONTON, AB –– Hours after Ward Sspomitapi council candidate Harman Kandola raised urgent concerns about Edmonton’s municipal election conflicting with Diwali, two leading mayoral candidates, Michael Walters and Tim Cartmell, have joined the call to ensure South Asian communities are not disenfranchised.

Michael Walters, candidate for Mayor of Edmonton, stated:

“October 20th is not just election day in Edmonton, it’s also Diwali, one of the most important celebrations for South Asian communities. Every single one of Edmonton’s diverse communities deserves a seat at the table when we decide who will lead our city for the next four years. Holding the election on Diwali risks leaving out families who are gathering, worshipping, and celebrating that day. Edmonton Elections must take every possible step to ensure South Asian communities are not sidelined or disenfranchised and that voting on Diwali is fully accessible, visible, and supported.”

Tim Cartmell, also running for Mayor, emphasized the same concern:

“In my recent meetings with Edmonton’s South Asian community, I’ve heard loud and clear the importance of celebrating Diwali without losing the chance to vote. I’m joining the call to encourage Edmonton Elections to set up mobile polling stations so families can worship, celebrate, and still make their voices heard.”

Harman Kandola welcomed their support, stating:

“This is about ensuring every Edmontonian has a fair chance to vote. When leading mayoral candidates stand together with community voices, it shows that this issue cannot be ignored.”

A Growing Call for Action
The Kandola Campaign, joined by Walters and Cartmell, is calling on Edmonton Elections to:

Place mobile polling stations at gurdwaras, mandirs, and community halls hosting Diwali gatherings on election day.

Work with community leaders to ensure polling access is visible and supported.

Commit to long-term reforms at the provincial level to prevent elections from conflicting with major cultural or religious observances in the future.
