MANILA – Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday conveyed his sympathies to the families of victims killed in the deadly 6.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Cebu on Tuesday.
In a message of solidarity, the Malaysian leader said Kuala Lumpur stands ready to support Manila’s relief and recovery efforts.
“I am deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake that has struck Cebu and neighbouring areas of the Philippines. The loss and hardship endured by so many families weigh heavily on us, and Malaysia mourns with the people of the Philippines in this time of grief,” he said.
“Malaysia stands in full solidarity with the Philippines. We will do what we can to support relief and recovery efforts, and we pray that the strength and resilience of the Filipino people will carry them through these difficult days.”
In a separate statement, the United Nations Philippines sent its deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and expressed its readiness to support the government’s quake response operations.
“We mourn the loss of lives and the suffering endured by families and communities, and we stand with all those affected during this difficult time,” it said.
“The United Nations commends national and local authorities for swift response. We are, together with the government and partners, assessing impact and remain ready to support response and recovery efforts,” it added.
Over 60 were reported dead while scores were hurt following the deadly earthquake that jolted Bogo City, Cebu, around 9:59 p.m. on Sept. 30. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council is still validating reports on casualties.
Earlier, Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro appealed to the private sector and individuals to help provide hot meals and ready-to-eat food for the earthquake victims, especially those in northern Cebu.
The entire province has already been placed under a state of calamity. (PNA)
