Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women Tanya Fir issued the following statement in recognition of Women’s History Month:
“October is Women’s History Month, a time for us to recognize the contributions of remarkable women who have shaped Alberta’s story.
“Our province has a long tradition of women breaking barriers and transforming their passions into actions that benefit us all.
“Trailblazers like the Famous Five from Alberta, who secured women’s recognitions as ‘persons’ under Canadian law, Captain Rosella Marie Bjornson, Canada’s first woman commercial jet pilot, Muriel Stanley Venne, founder of the Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women and Virnetta Anderson, Calgary’s first Black city councillor, helped open doors and strengthen communities across Alberta.
“This month, we honour the women who are visionaries, caregivers and leaders whose contributions laid the foundations of our society. We also celebrate the women of today, who uplift others through mentorship, lead with compassion and drive economic growth in our province.
“As we honour the past, celebrate the present and look ahead to our bright future, we reaffirm our commitment to building a stronger Alberta for the generations of women to come. I encourage all Albertans to use this time to celebrate the women making a difference in their lives.”
