Modern tools, better surgical care
Alberta’s government is upgrading medical device reprocessing departments across the province to strengthen surgical care.
Medical device reprocessing (MDR) departments are a vital part of Alberta’s surgical infrastructure, ensuring surgical tools are properly sterilized and available to support safe, timely surgeries. MDR departments are a key reason Alberta achieved a record-breaking 318,920 surgeries last year and continues to outperform the national average for surgical wait times in procedures such as hip replacements, hip fracture repair and knee replacements.
That’s why Alberta’s government dedicated $243 million over three years in Budget 2025 to the Medical Device Reprocessing Upgrade Program to modernize departments across the province. These upgrades will reduce surgical delays, lower wait times and ensure Albertans receive timely surgeries when they need them.

Grey Nuns Community Hospital
Misericordia Community Hospital
It also expands the upgrades at six additional hospitals, including:

Kaye Edmonton Clinic
Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute
Rockyview General Hospital
Cross Cancer Institute
Barrhead Healthcare Centre
