More places for year-round play

Alberta’s government is investing $3 million through the 2025 Active Communities Initiative to support two major sport and recreation projects in Edmonton.

Sport and recreation facilities promote active living and well-being in Albertan communities where residents embrace year-round recreation opportunities. Alberta’s government is investing $3 million through the 2025 Active Communities Initiative to support two significant local projects: a new multisport turf facility and a new ski lodge.

The Active Communities Initiative is Alberta’s first grant program solely dedicated to funding sport and recreation infrastructure. Each project reflects the unique needs of its community and together, they are projected to serve up to a million Albertans. The expansion and creation of these final projects bring the initiative’s total to $10 million in provincial investment and an estimated $60 million in economic activity for Alberta while creating both short and long-term employment opportunities.

“Our government is proud to support projects that strengthen our communities. By investing in facilities like the Edmonton Minor Soccer Association’s new multisport turf project and the Edmonton Ski Club’s new lodge, we’re expanding access for Edmontonians to stay active, build connections and enjoy recreation year-round.”

Andrew Boitchenko, Minister of Tourism and Sport
The Edmonton Minor Soccer Association will receive $1.5 million to develop a new multisport turf facility, expanding indoor training capacity and creating more space for year-round community programs. The facility will support young athletes, families and partner groups from across the city.

“We are incredibly appreciative of a provincial government that recognizes the vital role of amateur sport in building healthy communities. By working in direct partnership with associations like ours, they are making it clear that the physical and social well-being of our youth is a top priority.”

Mario Charpentier, president, Edmonton Minor Soccer Association
In addition to the $650,000-Community Facility Enhancement Program grant awarded to the Edmonton Ski Club through Budget 2024, they will also receive $1.5 million towards building their new, modern lodge that will better serve skiers, snowboarders, families and the many community groups who use the hill throughout the year. The new lodge will enhance accessibility, strengthen programming and support the long-term sustainability of this historic community asset.

“You don’t need a mountain to build a champion, but you do need a community that invests in its athletes. By supporting the Edmonton Ski Club’s Outdoor Activity Centre, the Government of Alberta is removing barriers to sport and creating a sustainable legacy for winter recreation. I am incredibly proud to see my home province championing the facilities that will shape the future of Alberta’s sport culture.”

Jenn Heil, Olympic gold medallist and Team Canada chef de mission, Edmonton Ski Club
Active Communities Initiative funding is open to eligible community groups, non-profit organizations and societies, including First Nations and Metis Settlements that wish to build or enhance active spaces that support sport and recreational opportunities for their communities. Applications for the 2026 Active Communities Initiative will open in the spring.
