Major Roadways (Phase 1) Parking Ban ends February 22 at 7 a.m.
The city-wide Major Roadways (Phase 1) Parking Ban concludes on Sunday, February 22, at 7 a.m. The parking ban, activated on February 18, was required to effectively clear significant snow accumulation from arterial roads, collector roads, bus routes and roads within Business Improvement Areas. The parking ban was in effect for four days and is ending one day earlier than originally anticipated due to operational efficiencies implemented during the response.
What’s next
With the Major Roadways (Phase 1) Parking Ban completed, crews will now begin to remove centre stacks and windrows in Business Improvement Areas and other high-priority locations.
Crews will assess all residential areas and, as needed, groom and level driving lanes to maintain a safe travel lane and mitigate rutting, without enacting a Residential (Phase 2) Parking Ban. This work is expected to take 10-to-14 days to complete.
In residential areas, sanding will occur at entrances and high-risk intersections.
As crews work through residential areas, plows will also groom alleys and lanes, as needed.
As per service levels, snowpack must exceed 5 cm prior to widespread clearing of residential (Priority 4) roadways. The current snowpack is – and is anticipated to remain – below that threshold based on current weather conditions and forecast.
Reminders for the public
Allow crews adequate and safe space to work. Drivers should maintain a distance of at least eight metres when behind snow-clearing equipment.
Report winter road concerns through 311. This allows crews to identify trends, coordinate responses and ensure the most efficient service delivery.
Property owners are reminded that shovelling snow onto the street or bike lanes is prohibited (see Traffic Safety Bylaw 5590) as this creates hazards and accessibility issues in areas that have been cleared.

City crews continue to work 24 hours a day to address minor snow accumulation and apply traction material as they maintain more than 12,000 kilometres of roadways and 500 kilometres of active pathways.
