Spring Sweep starts April 7; Parking Ban begins April 13

The City’s annual Spring Sweep, which clears debris and dust from roadways and City-serviced active pathways across Edmonton, will take place between April 7 and June 1. This essential maintenance improves road and pathway safety, prevents debris from entering storm drains, improves air quality and minimizes vehicle damage.

“For cleaner and safer roads, bike lanes and major pathways, street cleaning is an essential service that removes debris and dust,” said Val Dacyk, General Supervisor of Infrastructure Field Operations. “To ensure crews can safely and completely clear all debris from curb to curb in residential areas, a temporary parking ban is necessary. Residents must move their vehicles off the roadway when a parking ban is issued for their neighbourhood to avoid a ticket and enable crews to finish their work.”

Spring Sweep of major roadways
Major roadways and Business Improvement Areas, boulevards, arterial roads and other high-traffic locations will be cleaned on weekdays starting April 7. While work will occur 24 hours a day, sweeping on major roadways generally takes place at night when there are fewer parked vehicles. As a result, no major roadway parking ban will be needed to support this work.

Spring Sweep of residential roadways and residential parking ban
Residential roadway cleaning will take place and a residential parking ban will be in effect in identified neighbourhoods on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., starting April 13.

Neighbourhoods will be scheduled for cleaning in one-week increments, and cleaning may occur at any time between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. from Monday to Friday to reduce noise and disruption for residents. The parking ban is only active in residential neighbourhoods when crews are scheduled. Schedules will be posted online with as much notice as possible and signs are placed in neighbourhoods at least 24 hours prior to cleaning.

Vehicles must be moved off these roadways during this time and owners who fail to comply will receive a $250 fine per vehicle; vehicles will not be towed.

Parking may resume in each neighbourhood once street cleaning is marked as complete on the Street Sweeping Map and parking ban signage is removed.

Neighbourhood scheduling
Parking ban signage will be placed at main entrances in each neighbourhood at least 24 hours prior to cleaning. Each sign indicates the week cleaning will occur. Not every roadway within each neighbourhood will have a sign.
The Street Sweeping Map will be updated daily to display the schedule and status of all roadways.
Residents who have subscribed to Service Notifications will receive communications with information specific to their address(es), including the scheduled dates for their streets, service updates and an alert when cleaning is completed.
Safety reminder
Residents are encouraged to remove driveway ramps from curbs when cleaning crews are in the area. While workers will avoid ramps and other items left in roadways whenever possible, these items may be damaged or could result in cleaning not being fully completed, impacting the overall completion of the neighbourhood.

Residents must keep a safe distance from sweeping equipment and allow cleaning crews room to work. The City has measures in place to minimize dust, but street sweepers can still create dusty conditions that reduce visibility. If you see dust, slow down and drive to conditions. Give crews and equipment plenty of space in front, behind and on both sides.
