Elder Abuse Intervention Team investigating ‘disturbing’ case
The Edmonton Police Service’s Elder Abuse Intervention Team (EAITeam) recently responded to a case involving a 73-year-old woman living in deplorable conditions.
On Jan. 9, 2014, the EAITeam discovered the senior was living in a rental apartment where the kitchen ceiling had collapsed due to leaking water, which had precipitated the growth of black mold and electrical failures.
“The preliminary indications are that this elderly lady was suffering greatly, living in deplorable conditions,” said Const. Darren Smith, of the EPS EIATeam.”
The EAITeam transported the female complainant to hospital for observation. Alberta Health was contacted to inspect the residence, which was subsequently deemed unfit for human habitation. The landlord has since been ordered to repair the damages to the dwelling.
The EAITeam continues to work with partner agencies, including the Seniors Association of Greater Edmonton (SAGE), to find a new home for the complainant.
While this investigation is focused on living conditions, the EAIT is also responsible for investigating cases of physical, emotional and psychological abuse against seniors. The EAIT is responsible for assessing information from investigative reports about seniors, aged 65 years and older, to determine if they are in an abusive situation or care, and if required, provide intervention.
The EAIT consists of a police constable and specialized community agency support from the City of Edmonton Community Services Department, Victorian Order of Nurses, Covenant Health and Catholic Social Services and the EPS Victim Services Unit.
Anyone with information about a senior citizen they believe is being abused is urged to contact the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.
