Filipino football fans will have their eyes glued on Seattle Seahawks’ No.89 tonight.

Wide receiver Doug Baldwin Jr., whose grandmother is Filipino, is best remembered for carrying a Philippine flag onto Century Link Field on November 17, 2013 to honor typhoon Haiyan victims.

Baldwin’s grandmother Pica grew up in a town near Tacloban City, which was devastated by the super typhoon.

Baldwin in an interview by seahawks.com said it was a scary time for her grandmother and the family but were relieved after receiving a phone call that all of their relatives were alive and safe. “Many of their houses were destroyed, but there were no serious injuries. It was a real relief”.

After marrying Baldwin’s grandfather Junius, a U.S. Armed Forces personnel stationed in the Philippines, they moved to Gulf Breeze, Florida where she raised her daughter Cindy and taught her Filipino customs and traditions which were passed along to Doug.

Baldwin tweeted today feeling blessed by God for the opportunity to play in the Super Bowl championship.(pinoy edmonton news with reports from seahawks.com)
