Measles case in Edmonton Zone prompts alert to potential exposures

EDMONTON — Alberta Health Services has confirmed a new case of measles in the Edmonton Zone, and is advising of potential exposures. The case involves an unimmunized infant under 12 months of age.
Individuals who were at the following locations, on the dates and in the time frames noted, may have been exposed to this newly confirmed case of measles:
Passengers and crew on Lufthansa Flight # LH763 – departing New Delhi April 24th at 1230 hrs arriving in Munich at 0500 hrs.
Passengers and crew on Lufthansa Flight #LH6790 – departing Munich at 1150 hrs April 24th arriving in Toronto at 1440 hrs.
Passengers and crew on Air Canada AC157 departing Toronto at 1830 hrs on April 24th and arriving in Edmonton at 2044 hrs.
Members of the public and staff who were in the Edmonton International Airport on April 24th, between the hours of 2044 hrs and 2315 hrs.
Members of the public and staff who were in All-Well Medical Clinic, 4217 23 Ave, Edmonton, on April 27th, 2014 between 1000 and 1330 hrs.
Members of the public and staff who were in Walmart at 1203 Parsons Rd, Edmonton, on the 27th of April, between 1900 and 2200 hrs.
Members of the public and staff who were in the Medical Clinic at 209-9252 34 Ave, (Dr. Bhambhani’s office) Edmonton, on April 28th, between 1045 and1330 hrs.
Members of the public and staff who were in Dynalife Lab on April 28th, at Tawa Centre, 3015 66 St, Edmonton, between 1430 and 1730 hrs.
Members of the public and staff who were at the medical clinic at 209-9252 34 Ave (Dr. Bhambhani’s office) on the 29th of April, between 0945 and 1230 hrs.
Members of the public and staff who were at Medical Imaging Consultants at Tawa Centre on April 28th, between 1300 and 1530 hrs
Individuals who were in the above locations in the noted timeframes and who have NOT already had measles disease, or who have NOT received two doses of measles vaccine, may be at risk for developing measles.
These individuals are advised to monitor for monitor themselves for symptoms of measles. If symptoms of measles do develop, these individuals are advised to stay home and call Health Link Alberta (1.866.408.5465) before visiting any health care facility or provider.
Symptoms of measles include:
fever of 38.3° C or higher; and
cough, runny nose and/or red eyes; and
a red blotchy rash that appears three to seven days after fever starts, beginning behind the ears and on the face and spreading down to the body and then to the arms and legs.
Measles is an extremely contagious disease, spread easily through the air. Though there is no treatment for measles, it can be prevented through immunization.
In Alberta, measles vaccine is offered, free of charge, through Alberta’s publicly funded immunization program. Children in Alberta typically receive their first dose of measles vaccine at 12 months of age, and their second dose between the ages of four and six years.
Albertans uncertain of their immunization history, or their child’s immunization history, can call their local public health office or Health Link Alberta (1-866-408-5465) to discuss.
