Work Begins on Molson’s Brewery Site
*Heritage of historic building to be preserved
The heritage of the Molson Brewery building will be preserved when demolition of the historic building begins later this month.
The north, south, and portions of the east walls will be rebuilt as part of a new development on the site. They will include some bricks from the brewery building at 104 Avenue and 121 Street.
“The demolition permit was conditional on the walls of the historic Molson Brewery Building being incorporated into the new development. Similar methods were used for the Kelly Ramsey Building and the Alberta Hotel,” says David Holdsworth, Principal Heritage Planner with the City of Edmonton. “The dismantling will allow for an underground parkade and will incorporate the lower eastern portion of the Molson’s building. It will also enable some of the larger brewery tanks to be removed from the building.”
The new development by First Capital Equities will include a grocery store and some retail.
The tower portion of the Molson’s Brewery Building will remain. The City and the Province are currently in negotiations with the owner to have the structure designated a protected historic resource as part of any future restoration and development work the developer considers. The development details of the final design for the tower portion of the Molson’s Brewery are still under negotiation.
