Excitement is in the air for the upcoming 1st “Battle of Champions” dubbed the “Joe Medina Cup” that will reel off on June 14 at the St.Francis Xavier Recreation Centre in Edmonton, Alberta.

Filipino-Albertan clubs from Grande Prairie, Fort Saskatchewan, Leduc, Wainwright, Peace River, Lloydminster, Fort McMurray, Sherwood Park and host Edmonton will play for two days with the top team earning the honor of becoming the first champion of the event organized to promote unity and forging stronger friendships in the Filipino community.

The Joe Medina Cup, made in honor of Crosstown Auto Centre president Joe Medina who has been instrumental in keeping Filipino basketball leagues going on in Alberta Province, will be awarded to the team winner and they will keep it until a new champion emerges in the next tournament.

“Nakakatuwa kasi nag fund raising pa ang ibang clubs para sa board and lodging nila dito sa Edmonton. Makikita mo ang pagkakaisa ng mga Pilipino dito sa Alberta,” said Tiongson, a key member of the champion coaching staff of Norman Black at the Ateneo de Manila University and Talk N’ Text of the professional league PBA in the Philippines before moving to Canada.

Philippine Sports Association (PSA) president Joey Doctolero announced that teams should be at the gym at 8:30 a.m. for the drawing of lots.
