Celebrate Canada Day in Edmonton

Tuesday July 1, 2014

Celebrate Canada’s 147th birthday in Edmonton by joining in on some of the many fun family events taking place around the city. End the day by watching the inaugural lighting of the historic High Level Bridge and the spectacular Canada Day fireworks finale in the river valley.

Lighting of the High Level Bridge

Time: 11pm
Watch history being made as 55,000 LED lights are turned on for the first time. Head to your favourite river valley viewing site (such as Ezio Faraone Park, TELUS Field, River Valley Road, Saskatchewan Drive, the Legislature grounds) and see what a community can do to make life a little brighter. Tune in to CKUA on your radio or smartphone, then listen, watch and enjoy as the bridge lights are synchronized to an Edmonton Symphony Orchestra performance ofO Canada!

Canada Day Fireworks Finale

Time:  11pm
Enjoy the magnificent fireworks display over Edmonton’s river valley parks and the North Saskatchewan River.

Good viewing locations:

  • Alberta Legislature Grounds
  • Victoria Park (River Valley Road)
  • Ezio Faraone Park (west entrance to High Level Bridge on 109 St. north)
  • Dantzer’s Hill (below Queen Elizabeth Park)
  • Government House Park (Groat Road & River Valley Road)
  • TELUS Field is offering a reduced admission price of $4 per person after the 8th inning of the Edmonton Prospects vs. the Regina Red Sox game for those who wish to view the fireworks. Food concessions will be open until 10:30pm.

Note: No viewing is available from Kinsmen Park.

Viewing areas accessible on foot only (closed to vehicles):

  • River Valley Road
  • Queen Elizabeth Park Road
  • 109 St. (between Saskatchewan Drive & the High Level Bridge)

Access is restricted in Kinsmen Park, High Level & Menzies Bridges after road closure times. Kinsmen playground and picnic area are closed on Canada Day.

Note: Access to low-lying river valley trails may be closed and open trails should be approached with caution. Before entering the trail system, visit the website for current trail cautions and closures.

Road Closures for Fireworks Finale

Expect traffic delays two hours before the fireworks and 90 minutes after the show.  Please be patient and courteous to help to make the trip home from the fireworks safe for everyone.  For road closure details visit Road and Traffic updates.

Event Parking

Usual restrictions and increased parking bans will be in effect. With minimal parking in the area of many venues, Edmontonians are encouraged to take the bus or LRT. Vehicles illegally parked will be tagged and towed.

Canada Day at City Hall

Time: 1-4pm
Show off your Canadian pride by celebrating our nation’s birthday with free Canada Day activities at City Hall.  Enjoy live music and dancing, kids’ crafts by The Works Art & Design Festival, cultural performances, City Hall tours, displays and much more.  A Canada Day ceremony will take place at 1pm in the City Room.

Canada Day at the Edmonton Valley Zoo

Time:  11am-4pm
Cost:  Regular Admission
Celebrate Canada Day and the Edmonton Valley Zoo’s 55thbirthday!  Visit the Canadian animals, make a craft, eat a red and white cupcake, and enjoy a wonderful mix of family activities and entertainment.

Canada Day at the Muttart Conservatory

Time:  Noon-4pm
Cost:  Regular Admission
Celebrate our nation’s birthday with a visit to the Muttart Conservatory. Enjoy live music, Canada Day crafts and face painting fun. Treats and fun activities will be available throughout the day – a fun event for the whole family!

Dominion Day at Fort Edmonton Park

Time:  10am-6pm
Celebrate the 147th anniversary of the Confederation of Canada. Witness new Canadians take the Oath of Citizenship, visit the War of 1812 Parks Canada Travelling Exhibit and bask in the excellence of being Canadian – eh! Music, games, and historical vignettes will add to the ambiance of the park throughout the day. Avoid the line ups; visit  Fort Edmonton Park to buy your tickets online.

Cool Off on Canada Day

Spend time soaking up the summer at a City of Edmonton outdoor pool or visit a recreation centre. Regular admission rates apply. For holiday hours, visit Recreation Centres. Or splash away the day at one of the City’s free Water Play Features (spray parks).

The Works Art & Design Festival at City Hall

Time:  1-4pm
Join The Works Art & Design Festival at City Hall for a free kids’ crafts workshop.

Mill Woods Celebrates Canada Day

Time:  1-11pm
Come to Mill Woods Park (66 St. & 23 Ave.) and join in on the free family activities including hay rides, a petting zoo, carnival games, bouncy castles and an inflatable obstacle course, live music and more! Canada Day Events in Boyle McCauley

Celebrate Canada Day in the heart of downtown Edmonton with two free events:

Boyle Street Community League BBQ
Come to the Boyle Street Plaza (9538-103A Ave.) for a free BBQ celebration. Halal food will be available.

Chinatown Night Market
Celebrate Canada Day on Harbin Road (in front of the Chinatown Multicultural Centre (9540-102 Ave.) with traditional entertainment, arts and gift sales and food trucks. (Please note that 102 Ave. will be closed to vehicles between 95 St. and 96 St. during this time.)

Canada Day at the Alberta Legislature

Time:  10am-10pm
Celebrate our nation’s birthday at the Alberta Legislature with live entertainment and a variety of free family activities.

Celebrate Canada Day at the Art Gallery of Alberta

Time: 11am-5pm
There’s fun for the whole family at the Art Gallery of Alberta this Canada Day. FREE admission. Bring the whole family for art activities, a BBQ and a chance to view some exciting exhibitions. Last admission will be at 4:30pm.

ETS Canada Day Service

On Tuesday July 1, all ETS bus routes will operate on their regular Sunday schedules throughout the day.  The LRT will operate on a 10 minute frequency after 10am to the end of the service day. Regular Transit fares apply.

Please note that LRT service over the Menzies Bridge (between University and Grandin Stations) will be suspended starting at approximately 10:45pm for the fireworks and lighting of the High Level Bridge. The bridge could remain closed for up to 60 minutes. While the bridge is closed, trains will continue to operate between University and Century Park stations on the south side of the river and between Grandin and Clareview on the north side of the river. If you need to cross the river, please be aware of the potential for delay and adjust your travel plans accordingly.  For route and schedule details, call BusLink at 780-496-1600 or check the onlineETS Trip Planner.

Special Fireworks Service
Extra service from transit centres at West Edmonton Mall (along Route 1), Eaux Claires/Northgate (along Route 9), Mill Woods (along Route 8), Westmount (along Route 5) and Southgate (along Route 9) will start at approximately 8pm to provide service before the fireworks display. Following the fireworks, buses will depart from downtown, Southgate and Coliseum areas. Service will be extended later on all routes operating after 10pm.

Fireworks Safety

If you are buying or using fireworks in Edmonton for the Canada Day weekend, be safe and make sure you have a permit to use them.  Before you use fireworks, always check to see whether there is a fire ban in effect.  For more information contact the Fire Prevention Office at 780-496-3628.
