News Release

Police investigating pedestrian collision on Jasper Avenue

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle that occurred last night, Wednesday, July 9, 2014, near 119 Street and Jasper Avenue.

Downtown Division patrol members responded to the reported collision just before 9 p.m. Wednesday evening. Upon arrival, officers found a female pedestrian on the ground in a marked crosswalk (not controlled by flashing warning lights).

Witnesses told police the female pedestrian was walking southbound across the first eastbound lane of the intersection at 119 Street and Jasper Avenue, when she was allegedly struck by an oncoming 2013 Nissan Altima travelling east.

Paramedics transported the 19-year-old female pedestrian to hospital, where she remains this morning in critical condition.

Although the investigation is in its preliminary stages, investigators do not believe alcohol nor speed were factors in the collision. No charges have been laid at this time. The EPS Major Collision Investigations Section has since taken over the investigation.

There have been four pedestrian fatalities thus far in 2014 and six in 2013 (YTD).

Anyone with information regarding the collision is asked to contact the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online atwww.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.
