Suspect in Edmonton sexual assault arrested in Australia

 Two officers from the Edmonton Police Service recently travelled to Australia to transport Nicholas Lemont, 24, back to Edmonton on charges that include sexual assault with a weapon and forcible confinement.

On Friday, June 22, 2012 at approximately 1 a.m., a male suspect allegedly gained access to a residence in the McCauley neighbourhood and sexually assaulted a 19-year-old female.

Downtown Division officers responded to the reported assault, and the female was transported to hospital. Detectives from the EPS Sexual Assault Section took over the ongoing investigation.

A Canada-wide warrant was issued for Lemont’s arrest on Jan. 24, 2015 and he was arrested in Cairns, Australia by the Australian Federal Police. He was transported to Sydney and escorted back to Canada by the Edmonton Police Service on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015.

Lemont has been charged with the following:

  • Break and enter and commit assault with a weapon
  • Forcible confinement
  • Sexual assault with a weapon
  • Disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence
  • Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public

He was released Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015 on bail, with several conditions.  Lemont’s next court appearance is March 10, 2015.
