Campers, day-trippers and outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to have a safe and fun start to the summer.

The May long weekend signals the opening of Alberta’s provincial campgrounds

As people flock to provincial parks, museums and historic sites, the May long weekend is an opportune time to remind Albertans about responsible and respectful use of our natural areas, lakes and highways.

Whether destined for one of Alberta’s provincial parks, to the lake to open the cabin, or to visit family and friends, here are a few tips, reminders and information to help Albertans along the way.

  • Alberta’s 250 provincial campgrounds are ready to receive visitors for the 2015 season. Still looking for a campsite or a day use area? Check outAlbertaParks.ca
  • Visiting one of Alberta’s museums and historic sites is an excellent option this long weekend. Purchase an annual pass and explore all year long.
  • 511 Alberta has the information you need, including current weather, road construction and traffic delays, to make informed travel decisions.
  • Be aware of liquor and fire bans. Liquor bans apply to nine provincial campgrounds this weekend.
  • Arrive safe to your destination. Impaired driving, distracted driving and speeding can be fatal; always obey speed limits in construction zones.
  • Respect the land and know the rules and regulations around random campingon public lands.
  • Albertans share the landscape with wildlife, so be bear and cougar smart, especially if enjoying the backcountry.

To help make the weekend safe for everyone, Albertans can expect an increased presence of law enforcement officers patrolling roads, public lands and water bodies.
