The AINP is an economic immigration program operated by the Government of Alberta with the Government of Canada’s department of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). It supports Alberta’s economic growth by attracting and retaining work-ready immigrants to the province.

Individuals nominated by the Government of Alberta, together with their spouse/common-law partner and dependent children, can apply for permanent residence through CIC as a Provincial Nominee. CIC makes final decisions on all Provincial Nominee permanent resident applications.

Effective August 27, 2015, the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) will not be accepting new applications under any AINP Streams or Categories until January 27, 2016. This temporary pause will help the AINP assess existing applications in the queue and prevent the queue from growing further.

Applications postmarked after August 27, 2015 will be returned. Complete AINP applications postmarked on or before August 27, 2015 will be accepted for processing. AINP staff will continue to assess applications already in the queue. Visit the AINP processing and inventory page for regular updates on application processing and inventory status.

The AINP is a program for permanent residence. AINP nominations will not be issued for the purpose of obtaining temporary work permit extensions. See the FAQ section for more information.

Reminder:
You must maintain a valid work permit throughout the AINP application and assessment process. Only applicants under the Strategic Recruitment Stream Engineering Occupations Category are exempt from this requirement. At the time of assessment, you must provide the AINP with a valid work permit or implied status based on either:

  • a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
    or
  • LMIA exemption as determined by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC)

Some LMIA exemptions from CIC are not eligible under AINP. The AINP will not consider the following exemptions:

  • international students studying in Canada and doing co-op work placements or internships as part of their study program
  • people doing charitable or religious work
  • people who need to support themselves while they are in Canada, such as those waiting on a refugee claim

In addition, you must meet all criteria for the category under which you applied. See the FAQ section for more information.

Note:
The availability of AINP streams and categories is dependent upon application volumes and labour market needs. The AINP reserves the right to close application intake for any AINP stream or category at any time, without prior notice. Further, the AINP may decline to consider applications to closed or suspended streams or categories, regardless of when the applications were submitted. Changes to the AINP, including notice of suspension or closure of its streams and categories are available on the AINP news page and/or the AINP application forms page.

The AINP is not obligated to assess/process any applications submitted. Applications to the AINP are treated as an expression of interest, and as such, will be processed according to quality of the application (completeness, eligibility), labour market information, occupational supply and demand forecasting, AINP application volumes, and/or any other factors at the AINP’s discretion. By submitting an application to the AINP you acknowledge and agree that your application may not be processed in the order received, or at all. Further, the decision to assess/process any particular application, and the outcome of any such assessment/processing, is at the AINP‘s sole discretion. Program criteria are eligibility minimums, and meeting program criteria does not guarantee that an applicant’s application will be assessed, processed, or granted.
