Deacon Gem Mella of the Corpus Christi Parish in Edmonton has called upon parishioners and friends to join them on Friday’s “Mass for Peace in Marawi”.

The mass on August 4 starts at 7 o’clock in the evening and will be presided by Father J.Roy Allan Laudenorio.

The Philippines News Agency (PNA) reported that fighting broke out in Marawi City last May 23 after government troops tried to arrest Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon and ISIS “emir” in Southeast Asia.

Thousands have fled to the neighboring provinces, according to the wire agency, and hundreds have already died.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines, through the PNA, reported that the number of troops wounded in the ongoing battle to clear Marawi City of the remaining Maute Group terrorists is at 852.

The number of lawless elements killed is at 411.

Civilians rescued from the terrorists is pegged at 1,723.(p.e.n.)
