There is a new volleyball club on the rise in Edmonton.
Oliver Cabarubias just recently organized the Alberta Filipino Volleyball Club(AFVC), a registered non-profit organization, to serve the growing volleyball community.
What I know of is the ongoing basketball tournaments backed by Crosstown Auto Centre in Alberta Province, thanks to our news source and friend coach Chester Tiongson, and to my surprise when Oliver shared his story, there are already regular volleyball tournaments organized by Filipinos in the province too.
Just last March, Filipinos in Red Deer hosted a volleyball tournament and it was there that Oliver injured his knee.
Despite the injury, Oliver has not stopped meeting with his volleyball friends to formally organize AFVC and this coming October 7 to 8 at the Saville Community Centre, they will hold their first tournament.
In the men’s division, we have the George Smash team of Alvin and Erwin, Calgary All Stars of Francis and Jimmy, Regina Team of Julia Ayuban, Superfriends of Cito Gansan, Red Deer Warriors of Patrick, Winnipeg Tigers of Norvy Pedracio, Vancouver of Rem, High Prairie of Marvin Fabian, Grande Prairie of Monty and Renz, Victoria BC of Angelo Macalinao.
Eight teams, have so far, signed up in the women’s division led by the Lady Smashers of Aireen Gorman, Regina Team, Red Deer of Dana, GG Hawks of Danica Rabago, Winnipeg Lady Tigers, Grande Prairie of Monty Zapanta, Rought Sets of Tina Buenviaje and Vancouver of Rem CM.
We wish Oliver and AFVC officers all the best! (p.e.n.)
