Holy Week in Zamboanga generally peaceful
ZAMBOANGA CITY (Philippines News Agency) — The observance of the Holy Week in the Zamboanga region has been generally peaceful, a police official said Saturday.
“It was generally peaceful. There was no major incident recorded,” Chief Supt. Edwin de Ocampo, deputy regional director for administration of Police Regional Office 9 (Zamboanga) told the Philippine News Agency (PNA).
PRO-9, in coordination with the military, has deployed an ample number of policemen in all churches and sites of religious activities in the region, which covers the provinces of Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur, and the cities of Isabela and Zamboanga.
In this city, the Zamboanga City Police deployed nearly 2,000 policemen at the Climaco Freedom Park on Mount Abong-Abong, Barangay Pasonanca; and the Monte Santo Park in Barangay Lumayang.
Thousands of devotees converged on Mount Abong-Abong and on Monte Santo for the Way of the Cross and they stayed overnight from Maundy Thursday until Good Friday.
De Ocampo said police assistance desks have been set up in all churches and sites of religious activities to provide immediate help to the public as the need arises.
Route security has also been provided during the procession of the Santo Intiero that followed Good Friday’s Holy Mass and the Seven Last Words. (PNA)
